WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE?

Naturopathic medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) teach their patients to use diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and cutting edge natural therapies to enhance their bodies’ ability to ward off and combat disease. NDs view the patient as a complex, interrelated system (a whole person), not as a clogged artery or a tumour. Naturopathic physicians craft comprehensive treatment plans that blend the best of modern medical science and traditional natural medical approaches to not only treat disease, but to also restore health.

Naturopathic physicians base their practice on six timeless principles founded on medical tradition and scientific evidence.

  • Let nature heal

  • Identify and treat causes

  • Do no harm

  • Educate patients

  • Treat the whole person.

  • Prevent illness

THERAPIES

Botanical (herbal) medicine is the use of medicinal plants to treat or prevent illnesses. The use of plants for healing dates back to the beginnings of civilization and is the foundation of modern pharmacology.  Botanical medicines may be in the form of food, teas, extracts, powders, and liquid tinctures.  Dr. Wong carries a herbal dispensary and if needed, is able to custom compound herbal tinctures specific to your needs.

Clinical nutrition focuses on the overall health and dietary habits including factors such as:  lifestyle, medical history and family history. Dr. Wong offers food sensitivity testing and lab blood work can be ordered.

Acupuncture is one of the most commonly used medical practices in the world. Specific points on the body are stimulated with very fine disposable needles to encourage the body to promote natural healing, improve functioning and restore health.

Dietary modifications using Traditional Chinese Medicine classifies all food depending on the flavour, temperature and method of cooking. Food is seen as a form of medicine influencing the body. Depending on the individual diagnosis some foods may need to be eliminated and others added in order to create balance and health. A personalized food plan may be prescribed for you.

Pharmaceutical Medications are sometimes required when natural therapies are simply not effective on their own.  Dr. Wong is experienced in prescribing as needed.  She is knowledgeable in combining natural therapies with prescriptions to reduce medications and minimize side effects/interactions to fully benefit your health.
